What is Hospice Care

The Peace Hospice provides specialist palliative care for people and their families from across South West Hertfordshire who have a life limiting illness. Most of our patients have cancer but an increasing number have other conditions such as end stage heart disease, respiratory and neurological disease. Our care is holistic looking after the whole person, helping with emotional and spiritual issues as well as the physical symptoms each patient has. We focus on enabling patients to live their lives to the full and providing the best quality of life when a cure is not possible.
“You matter because you are you, and you matter to the last day of your life”

The Peace Hospice has been carefully designed making best use of natural materials, light and space so that it provides a warm, friendly and supportive environment in which everyone feels welcome. We have a team of specialist staff including doctors, nurses, social workers, counsellors and therapists who use their expertise and skill to support each patient to meet their individual needs. We treat pain and other physical symptoms, help patients come to terms with their illness and provide practical support with home care and benefits. We offer bereavement support, not just to patients' families and friends, but to anyone in South West Hertfordshire who has been bereaved.
We provide inpatient care in a 12 bedded unit, and day care for those patients well enough to stay at home. We also provide a hospice at home service to give care to patients in the comfort of their own home. As well as medical, nursing and social care, we also offer complementary therapies such as massage, aromatherapy and relaxation techniques.

Our Mission:
The Peace Hospice works to improve quality of life for people in South West Hertfordshire coping with life-limiting illness. We do this by:
- Providing the highest quality care, free of charge, both within the hospice and in the community
- Respecting patients' dignity and independence
- Supporting their family and friends before and after the end of life
- Helping other care providers to improve the lives of those who are facing the end of life
We believe that everyone should have the right to choose how they are cared for, therefore all of our care is given free of charge and is available to everyone in South West Hertfordshire. Our high quality care requires funding and as we receive only around 20% of our income from the health service, we are heavily dependent on the generosity of the community that we serve. The Peace Hospice is at the heart of that community.
